How to Give Your Bedroom a Country Feel

The lure of the countryside is appealing for a great many of us. The rolling hills, stunning sunsets and meandering rivers of rural Britain have a ready-made picture postcard feel that attracts many of us to want to live there and escape the stresses and strains of city life.

Yet, whether your countryside ambition is a real prospect or a distant dream you can still capture the essence of a rural idyll in your home through interior design. The best room of all to capture this peaceful vision of country life is in the bedroom – the one room where peace and tranquility matters above all else.

So, how do you embrace a country feel in your room?

A bad bed will let you down

There’s no way that you’ll be happy with your theme if your bed is a let down. You can have the nicest looking room in the world but you don’t really want to be looking at it all night when you can’t sleep with a bad back. It’s vital that it’s comfortable and supportive in order for you to get a good night’s sleep, therefore. It will be important to dress up the bed with the right quilt, pillows and cushions – this is the focal point of the room from a design point of view after all - and you can also choose a headboard that makes even the simplest bed look like it belongs in a country cottage. Browse around the Divan Beds Centre for inspiration and make your bed your first priority for your country-themed makeover.

Embracing the natural world

Peace and tranquility are two key themes for a country bedroom and so too is a splash of nature. Floral patterns on your bedding, curtains or rug can easily do this for you or you can take this one step further and invest in a plant or some flowers that could adorn your furniture. An article on Davidwolfe.com points out six great plants to consider that could actually improve your health for an added bonus.

Wooden furniture and flooring

You’ll need some furniture in your country themed room and wooden items are the perfect fit. You don’t need to spend lots on expensive pine pieces in stores though; you can easily take and ‘upcycle’ an old item (like these ones here) to give them the right rural look. Think about a wooden or wood-effect floor too. You can throw a cosy rug over the top to stop your feet getting cold in the winter.

Green and blue is just for you

When you’re designing any bedroom you need to be careful of the colour scheme you choose. Deep reds and purples can set the wrong tone if you want a nice, relaxing night’s sleep, for example. Luckily, greens and blues are ideal colours for your countryside feel and both can have a calming influence. Use these when picking paint or wallpaper for your walls or when shopping for your bedding and accessories.
